Understanding TMJ and TMD
Abbreviations can sometimes be difficult to understand without first knowing what they stand for. TMJ is an abbreviation for temporomandibular joint syndrome, whereas TMD stands for temporomandibular disorder. The thing they both have in common is that they develop as a type of tension or discomfort in a patient’s face because they affect the joint that’s located in front of the ear.
Identifying TMJ and TMD in Frisco
There are many symptoms of TMJ and TMD, some of which can only be identified and diagnosed by a dental professional such as Promont Dental Design, but following is a list of the most common symptoms that patients report:
- Swelling on the face around the jaw line
- Ongoing, throbbing pain in the neck, head, or jaw
- Impaired mobility of the jaw
- Locking of the jaw
- Clicking sounds originating from the joint
- Tooth sensitivity
- Morning headaches
Diagnosis Via an Exam
Many patients believe they can self-diagnose their TMJ and TMD by relying solely on the above symptoms. It should be noted, however, that these conditions can only conclusively be diagnosed through a physical examination of the face and jaw. Promont Dental Design has performed examinations and helped countless patients in Frisco with a prognosis and treatment plan for their TMJ and TMD.
Treatment Can Be as Easy as A Night Guard
Although surgery is required in rare and extreme cases, TMJ and TMD can easily be treated with the help of a custom-made mouth guard provided by Promont Dental Design. Designed to be worn at night, the mouth guard will reduce the impact on a patient’s jaw and therefore reduce the risk of the symptoms mentioned earlier. A mouth guard will also reduce the risk of chipped or broken teeth from unprotected TMJ and TMD pressure which could result in additional dental work.
